Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: I think those connections are a search for something of substance, something secure . . . but are often very shallow indeed.
Daf : wonderful combination peech-images
Daf : s peech
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: "This environment of reciprocal apprenticeship"
cheryloakes50 [Cheryl]: Dennis that is music to my thinking!
Daf : networked learning
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: Mine, too, Cheryl.
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: Exactly, Dafne.
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: forging, fostering, facilitating: yes
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: Yes, I think it IS a good thing: it inspires those who are secretly (or not so secretly) afraid of technology or fearful of looking like a fool. (It's OK to look like a fool, I think; it's part of learning.)
cheryloakes50 [Cheryl]: It is okay to demonstrate perseverance when working with technology, it doesn't always work smoothly.
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: Yes!
shieldsk : Ok, I made it, Hi all
vances : well done
shieldsk : thx!
shieldsk : what do you do vance?
vances : let's talk back in the webheadsinaction chat
shieldsk : ok
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: Students have the opportunity to "find their voices."
monayegy [Mona]: yes definetely
monayegy [Mona]: taking the responsibility of their own learning
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: Yes--and being INVOLVED in it.
monayegy [Mona]: but the crucial point here IF we do it right
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: I agree.
cheryloakes50 [Cheryl]: even the quiet students have a voice without the struggle.
monayegy [Mona]: I liked the idea of giving the middle space up ... for the learners... this will raise their confidence
ElizabethHa [Elizabeth]: Isn't some modeling needed somewhere along the line, however--so it's not just blab, blab, blab?
monayegy [Mona]: yes.... like I said we have to do it right ( within a frame ...)
ElizabethHa [Elizabeth]: These students are really engaged--if they read each other's work that really can do it.
ElizabethHa [Elizabeth]: So it's like a "read aloud protocol" -- they see how someone else does it.
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: But I think they do need some guidance.
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: I think that's what Barbara is talking about now.
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: "To start commenting . . . without setting down the groundwork . . . ." That's the modeling, the guidance, no?
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: (Actually that was an example of NOT modeling and providing guidance, but Barbara said it to show how important groundwork / background / modeling / guidance is, right?)
ElizabethHa [Elizabeth]: I'm fllowing it, Dennis--just supporting what she was saying
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: Me, too. Thinking out loud.
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: I didn't mean to seem critical or "teachy."
ElizabethHa [Elizabeth]: Question- Barbara--have you had any bad experiences, ie. someone who just didn't get it/post at all, or who stuck to trivial interactions?
vances : got a mic elizabeth?
vances :
shieldsk : bandwidth is a problem with elluminate
ElizabethHa [Elizabeth]: My computer seems to be fighting it all the way, too!
vances : I was having that problem on my laptop
durff [mrs]: can you put those links in the chat?
vances : I have a question
durff [mrs]: I can't copy them
vances : we can hear you ok
ElizabethHa [Elizabeth]: A tech question--do you have laptops/wireless? or computers in your regular classes? How do you show, e.g., the 5 blog examples to the class?
shieldsk : we ca hear you
shieldsk : but the ppt isn't moving
shieldsk : no we can't hear you!
vances : turn off the app share?
shieldsk : OK good now!
shieldsk : something is happening on the screen
shieldsk : slowly
durff [mrs]: I thought it was just me
ElizabethHa [Elizabeth]: It's the desktop sharing that causes problems, I think.
shieldsk : think so too
shieldsk : yes
shieldsk : we hear
vances : yep
ElizabethHa [Elizabeth]: yes--you are clear
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: Yes, we can hear.
vances : that was Mona
ElizabethHa [Elizabeth]: So it's kind of gradual blending
ElizabethHa [Elizabeth]: This is a great talk!!
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: I agree!
shieldsk : do you assign reading
shieldsk : like the book you mentioned?
shieldsk : Do they have to post to blogs or start their own
shieldsk : I'm in grad school and think it lacks interactivity
ElizabethHa [Elizabeth]: Sounds really logical
shieldsk : I like f2f for converstation butplease don't read from a ppt, you don't so that do you?
ElizabethHa [Elizabeth]: SK: Do you work in groups or only solo?
shieldsk : Do you podcast your lectures
shieldsk : Do you have people listening to your elluminate archives?
shieldsk : I wish I had you as a teacher
shieldsk : I agree
shieldsk : i can reead!
shieldsk : read!
