Aladoadmin : you can buy an island for as little as $3,000
DafneG : little?
SusNy : but you can hire land very cheap also
Vance : Linden?
alicebarr : Group on EduIsland II is trying to coordinate Teen SL and Main Grid
susanb : lucky you...Sus
aiden : real $?
Vance : F.U.N.
aiden : columbia can afford it :-)
elderbob : So there is no "Freeware" island.
Michael Shade : Andrew said 6 months development - that's a big investment
alicebarr : Elder Bob Sl is technically free
DafneG : there should be
DafneG : EduNation
Vance : SusNy Foss and Webhead Link are both in SL now
alicebarr : Come to EduIsland II to try things out
DafneG : there is a webhead hut at EduNation
elderbob : and the Linden dollars can be converted
susanb : i-candy...
susanb : very nice
DafneG : :-)
AnneF : eye candy
Aladoadmin : it is a fact that corporations are heavily invested in SL
Aladoadmin : and it is a money making enterprise
alicebarr : Not yet elderbob but Educators are trying to figure out ways to do what you say
aiden : it would be difficult--perhaps in the future but not anytime soon
Vance : if it costs you money that's quite understandable
Aladoadmin : yes
Aladoadmin : they can convert the L$ to USD
aiden : we're also speaking of real $--for teachers in Asia, this would cost them heaps!
alicebarr : It's been a tremendous collaborative opportunity
AnneF : I don'tthink that the big companies have a business model in SL. They're trying it out
elderbob : I agree Alice
cris : hi
cris :
Hala : Teaches in Africa too,Aiden
DafneG : many architects have move their offices to SL
aiden : i agree, Hala
elderbob : I have a bank account once or twice a month.
Hala : Thus, we are flourishing
alicebarr : ElderBob When you do come in, come to EduIsland II I am LillyoftheSea Starr and you can try things out in my house
Aladoadmin : actually we make very little money out of what we do here
Michael Shade : Vance, Susy - whereabouts are you in SL at the moment?
elderbob : Thank you Alice...I will do that
Aladoadmin : if I was not on the payroll at City Colleges and with the State of IL I could not do some of the things I like to do on my own
DafneG : I have it for a couple of hours a month (the time it takes to take my money out once my salary has been deposited)

aiden : that's true, Andy
DafneG : I work for a public university :-(
aiden : it's the same thing here
Hala : Same here in Sudan
aiden : but even for public unis here Daf
SusNy : yes - money are an interesting drive for innovation - but when it comes to greed and you start exploiting friends, then it becomes an ethical matter
elderbob : Money is not necessarily evil in itself, its the ethics of generating it that gets my concern.
DafneG : students don't pay at our public universities
DafneG : our budget is very low
Nellie : I usually have to pay to present at conferences and I can't afford it
aiden : in the school where I worked for 2 years ago, the dept head told me to not fail students as much as possible--because that would affect enrolment rate!
cris : I know the feelling
Michael Shade : aiden - that's widespread
SusNy : Daf - here in Denmark, most higher education is free as well
cris : it happens to me too nellie
dlaufenberg : My old university pulled all of the landlines out of the dorms... because of more affordable versions of communication
Aladoadmin : you may have to adjust the sound
Hala : It happens here too,Aiden
aiden : the video is clear, andy
Michael Shade : do I need to install - no I don't!
Nellie : I had to explain my situation at the MoodleMoot conference in Canada and they understood but most others don't care
DafneG : that's what i need
DafneG : for traffic jam
