SteveEdiger : Hi Jeff, I haven't tuned into Worldbridges in a while.
How are things going? Since I started listening, I've taken a
position of IT Director at United World College in Montezuma, NM.
Its a great school (92 nationalities represented in 11 and 12).
As soon as I get some hardware/internet bandwidth problems straightened
out, I'll be introducing some of these technologies.

elderbob [Elderbob]: Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage
Moderator: http://video-acsession.wikispaces.com/home
GrahamStanley [Graham]: good idea
Moderator: http://video-acsession.wikispaces.com/home
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: Yes, the URL came through fine.
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: I accessed it.
elderbob [Elderbob]: Let me log out and log back in....go ahead and
proceed.
GrahamStanley [Graham]: try another browser, elderbob - might help
Daf : lol
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: Amazing, huh?
GrahamStanley [Graham]: welcome back, elderbob
GrahamStanley [Graham]: is it working now?
nellieuller [Nellie]: nice
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: The Cannes video is playing.
Daf : video here
nellieuller [Nellie]: love the accent!
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: Makes it hard to hear YOU, Elizabeth.
nellieuller [Nellie]: I love that
NinaLiakos : Hi everyone, sorry I missed the beginning again.
Daf : hi Nina
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: Hi, Nina.
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: Leslie Opp-Beckman's project.
pj23harry [Paul]: Yes we have used Skype between wales in Uk and New
Zealand between Primary/Elementary pupils
Daf : great resources!
NinaLiakos : It's very nice to see ELizabeth as she speaks.
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: I agree, Nina.
NinaLiakos : The U of Maryland is going to switch to internet based
phones in the next year or so
pj23harry [Paul]: Another resource for videoconferencing is something
called Flashmeeting run by the Open University in the UK
NinaLiakos : Didn't webheads try it out during a DSunday chat once? not
very successfully?
GrahamStanley [Graham]: flashmeeting is fabulous - no downloads
necessary, low bandwidth
NinaLiakos : missed Robin Good
GrahamStanley [Graham]: we used it during TESOL EVO - it works
very well now
pj23harry [Paul]: I have used flashmeeting with schools in Europe as
well as a link with teachers in New Zealand
NinaLiakos : like YouTube?
GrahamStanley [Graham]: it looks more like a collection of links Nina
nellieuller [Nellie]: what flash meeting do you use?
GrahamStanley [Graham]: http://flashmeeting.open.ac.uk/
GrahamStanley [Graham]: you need to apply for an account, Nellie
dougsymington [Doug]: yes
nellieuller [Nellie]: y
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: Yes.
GrahamStanley [Graham]: yes
nellieuller [Nellie]: Graham, does it cost?
pj23harry [Paul]: flashmeeting.open.ac.uk/
GrahamStanley [Graham]: no, nellie - it's a beta project at the moment
nellieuller [Nellie]: I got that one, Graham.
GrahamStanley [Graham]: they'll charge for it later I'm sure
nellieuller [Nellie]: thank you
SteveEdiger : I won't be able to see video. 150 students are watching
YouTube right now. Bandwidth is definitely an issue.
Daf : folksonomy
NinaLiakos : Does anyone know why SpyBot keeps detecting registry
changes to my computer?
NinaLiakos : Not for you, Elizabeth/sorry
NinaLiakos : I've been denying the changes
nellieuller [Nellie]: page is not displaying
GrahamStanley [Graham]: Nina, you might have 'high priority' selected
as the default on Spybot
nellieuller [Nellie]: that's great
GrahamStanley [Graham]: I have 'normal' selected and it's not bothering
me
NinaLiakos : Graham, I have no idea how I set it.
NinaLiakos : Is "normal" enough?
GrahamStanley [Graham]: you can always set it back later nina
GrahamStanley [Graham]: select 'advanced mode' and then go to settings
- then you'll see it
NinaLiakos : I saw my class on Dekita!
pj23harry [Paul]: In Europe there is something called e-twinning.net
where schools/classes partners can be found.
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: E-twinning.net sounds very interesting.
GrahamStanley [Graham]: e-twinning is just for schools, isn't it, Paul?
pj23harry [Paul]: On e-twinning once you have registered and found a
pertner you have a Twinspce where you can manage your project.
GrahamStanley [Graham]: Dekita is a way for academies, university
groups, etc. to find others
NinaLiakos : Mohamed Yunus' idea of microlending
SteveEdiger : eliminate the middleman
NinaLiakos : You would need a middle man like Grameen Bank to teach the
borrower how to be a good borrower
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: Jamglue: What a fascinating possibility!
NinaLiakos : Grameen has a 95% return rate on its loans
SteveEdiger : That's great. My 12 year-old son is working on an idea
like this.
SteveEdiger : That's jamglue
pj23harry [Paul]: Jamglue sounds very interesting my daughter (16 would
love it)
dougsymington [Doug]: what is the licensing at jamglue?
dougsymington [Doug]: CC?
Moderator : I was wondering same myself
NinaLiakos : I can see it
nellieuller [Nellie]: that's cute
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: I love this--and have seen it several times.
lesteves : I LOVE IT!!!!
Daf : me too
Moderator : I showed this vid to my all of my students and as many
staff as I was able to
nellieuller [Nellie]: I love things that move!!!
lesteves : I will send the link to everyone in our department
elderbob [Elderbob] 1: Oh--that's the Wayback Machine--I teach
Examiners at the U.S. Patent Office how to use it in examining patent
applications
nellieuller [Nellie]: Hi Priscilla (Elderbob1)
elderbob [Elderbob] 1: Hi, Nellie!
Moderator (SessionLeader): I catch something different each time I
watch it.
Daf : me too, elizabeth
GrahamStanley [Graham]: this video recetly won a Wired 'Rave 2007'
award
elderbob [Elderbob] 1: We just made a CBT (Computer Based Training)
video for NPL (Non-patent literature--anything but a patent) but I like
this one's music much better!
GrahamStanley [Graham]:
http://www.wired.com/culture/lifestyle/multimedia/2007/04/ss_raves?slide=14
derice : Ah yeah I remember watching this video: it is great!
Moderator (SessionLeader): Who will organize the data--us
Moderator : I am surprised this video hasn't won a prize yet - so
compelling!
GrahamStanley [Graham]: it's been watched more than 1.8 million times
on You tube
dougsymington [Doug]: teach the machine--love that concept
nellieuller [Nellie]: I should add to my cell phone. LOL
nellieuller [Nellie]: Good for Internet addicts like me.
Moderator : those last few statements are jarring... great for class
discussion at any level
elderbob [Elderbob] 1: That was great!
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: And then there's Web 3.0—"The Semantic Web"
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semantic_Web
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: Check the link.
lesteves : Excellent ELizabeth thanks for that!
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: Yes, definitely excellent!
NinaLiakos : I enjoy that video
GrahamStanley [Graham]: Dennis, I thought Web 3.0 was going to be the
3D Web (Second Life, etc)?
NinaLiakos : So did I
nellieuller [Nellie]: Excellent!
Moderator (SessionLeader): It's a great video--and I first saw it
because of Webheads
elderbob [Elderbob] 1: I teach automated information systems, intuitive
and interactive software.
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: It could be.
Moderator : there is some argument about the next version of the webà
Daf : can you tell us about web 3.0 dennis?
elderbob [Elderbob] 1: we use videos like this one for demos, but I
lOVE this one
nellieuller [Nellie]: Priscilla, do you have a mic?
Moderator : semantic web is still a nebulous idea - or so I have been
told
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: Yes, it's still nebulous as far as I know.
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: See this:
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: "The semantic web is an evolving extension of
the World Wide Web in which web content can be expressed not only in
natural language, but also in a form that can be understood,
interpreted and used by software agents, thus permitting them to find,
share and integrate information more easily.[1] It derives from W3C
director Tim Berners-Lee's vision of the Web as a universal medium for
data, information, and knowledge exchange."
elderbob [Elderbob] 1: Yes, Nellie, I have a mic
Moderator (SessionLeader): Thank you!'
Moderator : can anyone REALLY predict the next version??
Moderator : could anyone have predicted the huge success of apps such
as youtube and skype??
GrahamStanley [Graham]: only with hindsight, Elizabeth
dougsymington [Doug]: the thing is that people are becoming their own
"software agents"
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: And this:
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: http://tinyurl.com/3bwd8l
NinaLiakos : Did Tim Berners-Lee predict what the web would become?
Moderator (SessionLeader): Making connections
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: From the above,
Moderator : because of the contribution of hte grassroots that makes it
so unpredictable
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: "The transformation will happen in one of two
ways. Some web sites will follow the example of Amazon, del.icio.us and
Flickr and will offer their information via a REST API. Others will try
to keep their information proprietary, but it will be opened via
mashups created using services like Dapper, Teqlo and Yahoo! Pipes. The
net effect will be that unstructured information will give way to
structured information - paving the road to more intelligent computing.
In this post we will look at how this important
Moderator : wikis are so flexible
Moderator : and they permit discussion
Daf : I am a wiki-nut
NinaLiakos : What's a mashup?
NinaLiakos : Is that like a coconut, Daf?
dougsymington [Doug]: taking pieces of "media" and "mash" them together
nellieuller [Nellie]: a tossed salad
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: From Wikipedia,"A mashup is a website or
application that combines content from more than one source into an
integrated experience."
Moderator : remix to remake
NinaLiakos : Hot Potatoes + mashup = ?
NinaLiakos : (don't forget the milk)
GrahamStanley [Graham]: someone has made a mashup of Google maps (or
Earthg) and audio - so you can have sounds when you look at the places
lainemarsh : creates a full learning environment - wikis
Moderator : hot potatoes are mashed up into moodle
NinaLiakos : I am so behind!
NinaLiakos : This learning curve is steep
Moderator : very hard to keep up
Daf : we are all newbies re technology
nellieuller [Nellie]: that's why these conferences are so great
elderbob [Elderbob] 1: but so fun to try
NinaLiakos : hard to stay on top of it
NinaLiakos : Yes, fun
Daf : F.U.N
GrahamStanley [Graham]: and there's a video site where you can overlay
comments, add speech ballons, etc (forget the name at the moment)
NinaLiakos :
Moderator (SessionLeader): It's a real conundrum
GrahamStanley [Graham]: to any Internet accessible video
pj23harry [Paul]: yes it is fun to find new applications and pass them
on to others
elderbob [Elderbob]: There are two elderbob's here....has someone taken
my identity
lainemarsh : I worked as an indexer once and we had an official listwe
had to choose from
dougsymington [Doug]: Graham, is it Crowdabout?
Moderator : yes, thought it might be crowdabout
Daf : always correcting us
lainemarsh : LInguists have an IPA - Int'l Phonetic Alphabet; I am sure
we can come up with some universal set of symbols or terms
nellieuller [Nellie]: especially with EFL
nellieuller [Nellie]: It's always asking me to search for ESL
Moderator : I am not sure there CAN be any systematized organization of
the data - I think we are moving to personal customized knowledge
spaces on the web
elderbob [Elderbob] 1: Some of the intuitive searching software
(proprietary) automatically looks for different spelling, singular and
plural, etc.
elderbob [Elderbob] 1: This is what I teach the Examiners of patent
applications to use
elderbob [Elderbob]: Thats the other elderbob speaking....
elderbob [Elderbob] 1: well, not usually for a patent app
nellieuller [Nellie]: that's Priscilla, Elizabeth not Elderbob1
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: See this one:
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: http://www.agtivity.com/def/mashup.htm
GrahamStanley [Graham]: no, Doug - can't remember the name (am
seraching for it at the moment)
Daf : your alter ego, bob
elderbob [Elderbob]: There are two elderbobsx
elderbob [Elderbob] 1: I'm sorry--I don't know how I usurped Elderbob's
name!
nellieuller [Nellie]: I sent elderbob's link to Priscilla
Moderator : (and I don't know how I came in as a moderator!!)
elderbob [Elderbob]: Are you Priscilla?
elderbob [Elderbob] 1: I just joined and it named me Elderbob the 2nd
elderbob [Elderbob] 1: yes
Daf : funny
elderbob [Elderbob]: and I am elderbob
NinaLiakos : This is way too confusing for me
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: Or this (from PCMag Encyclopedia)
NinaLiakos : I am going to dinner
elderbob [Elderbob]: Maybe its a mashup
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: "Definition of: mashup
A mixture of content or elements. For example, an application that was
built from routines from multiple sources or a Web site that combines
content and/or scripts from multiple sources is said to be a mashup.
The term became popular in the 2005 time frame."
nellieuller [Nellie]: Sorry, my fault for sending Elderbob's link
NinaLiakos : I'll see you later
NinaLiakos : Thanks for a very interesting session, ELiz.
nellieuller [Nellie]: it's second life, right?
elderbob [Elderbob]: This is starting to sound like the beginning of a
science fiction movie
elderbob [Elderbob]: I am meeting myself online
Daf : lol
SteveEdiger : great wiki, I'll look at it later
nellieuller [Nellie]: It's mirror ids
dougsymington [Doug]: thanks for a wonderful session Elizabeth, and all
dougsymington [Doug]: lots of great stuff
elderbob [Elderbob] 1: This is my first time joining any of these
presentations, thanks to Nellie's invitation, and I must say that I
have learned a lot in a short time--I now know what a mashup is!
Moderator (SessionLeader): Graham--why don't you talk about personal
customize knowledge spaces?
Daf : thanks elizabeth!
Moderator : thanks for a great discussion - wish I had not come in so
later
nellieuller [Nellie]: thank you, Elizabeth
jomynard [Jo]: Thanks
pj23harry [Paul]: Thanks elizabeth
elderbob [Elderbob]: Two parrallel worlds converge at the convergence
and elderbob meets elderbob (who is really Priscilla Presley.)
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: Yes, once again, thanks, Elizabeth. This was a
very useful, stimulating presentation.
elderbob [Elderbob] 1: yes--I was born on Jan 8th too
corachen [Cora]: Many thanks, Elizabeth!
elderbob [Elderbob]: But I was born in October
Moderator : fantastic
elderbob [Elderbob] 1: I'm elderbob's doppleganger over here in
Alexandria, VA
derice : thankssss
alicebarr [Alice]: Thanks!
Dennis-Phoenix [Dennis]: http://www-writing.berkeley.edu/TESL-EJ/
Daf : me too, Bob I am a libra
Moderator : bye
GrahamStanley [Graham]: thankyou Elizabeth
elderbob [Elderbob]: Hey cool, Daf
nellieuller [Nellie]: Bye
elderbob [Elderbob] 1: bye everyone
Daf : bfn, elizabeth,
nellieuller [Nellie]: See you tomorrow
elderbob [Elderbob]: Good presentation Elizabeth...

Moderator: Yes--everybody come for the roundup!
